An increasing number of grassroots campaigns and groups around the country have been set up to support unemployed workers and benefit claimants, fight privatisation and resist corporate profiteering from the welfare system. Below is an incomplete overview at some of these groups and what they do.

It is difficult to overstate the case with climate change. There is no bigger issue. Calm and informed voices - even David Attenborough's - are saying it is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. Indeed, it could even be the last.

RESISTING THE CORPORATIONS

Mainshill Solidarity Camp under eviction

After seven months of occupying woodlands in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, the Mainshill Solidarity Camp was last week preparing for eviction. Mainshill Woods, near the village of Douglas, is where Scottish Coal has been given permission to mine 1.7million tonnes of coal in the woods. It is one of the most heavily mined areas in Europe, with three opencast mines nearby (Poniel, Glentaggart and Broken Cross), all operated by Scottish Coal. The landowner is Lord Home, chairman of Coutt's bank, the corporate wing of RBS, who is currently being investigated for fraud.

EXTRACTION AND EXPLOITATION

Mining is one of the most environmentally damaging of industries. It contributes to climate change, is resposible for the displacement of communities and has a 'long and dismal record of damaging protected natural resources'. For the corporations involved in the industry it's a pretty lucrative business; enjoying money made at the expense of the planet. In terms of a pending energy crisis, nuclear is obviously not the answer: as well as contributing to climate change through construction of new buildings and transportation of spent fuel, uranium mining is one of the most CO2 intensive of industrial operations. See below for the companies that gain from mining, the techniques used and the social and environmental consequences.

The UK's long historical involvement in the Middle East, and leading role in the invasion and occupation of Iraq, is paying off for a great number of UK-based consultancy firms. Just as privatisation and the private finance initiative (PFI) in the UK have opened up a new arena of profits, so the restructuring of Iraq's economy is providing fertile opportunities for an army of consultants.
